Downtown Kyoto occupies the central ward of Nakagyo, centred on the Shijo and Sanjo streets that cross the Kamo River and connect the eastern hills to the western Arashiyama. This is Kyoto's busiest commercial zone — the Nishiki covered market, the Teramachi shopping arcade, the Gion Shijo restaurant district along the riverbank — and the area with the best public transport connectivity.
The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto on the Kamogawa riverfront is the finest downtown address — technically at the junction of downtown and the Gion approach, with river views on one side and the Higashiyama hills on the other, and walking distance to both the commercial centre and the geisha district. No other international luxury hotel in Kyoto has a comparable location.
For business and convenience-focused travellers, the Kyoto Brighton Hotel near the Nijo Castle and Hotel Granvia Kyoto adjacent to Kyoto Station offer the best connectivity options. The Brighton is older but consistently well-maintained; the Granvia's station-top position makes it the most practical address for Japan Rail Pass holders moving between Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo.
The Ace Hotel Kyoto in the Nakagyo ward is the most culturally interesting downtown hotel in the city — a collaboration with Japanese design studios TOTO and Kengo Kuma that takes serious artistic risks and creates a hotel of genuine contemporary character. The Ponto-cho dining alley is a 10-minute walk; Nishiki Market is 5 minutes; and the rooftop bar has views that compete with the premium hotel addresses at significantly lower cost.
