Piazza Navona follows the exact footprint of Domitian's 1st-century stadium — the oblong shape, the curving north end, and the sunken piazza level are all inherited from the ancient racetrack. Today, Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers dominates the centre, flanked by Borromini's Sant'Agnese in Agone church, and the whole ensemble creates the most photogenic public space in Rome.
Hotel near Piazza Navona occupy some of the city's finest palazzi. The streets radiating from the piazza — Via del Governo Vecchio, Via della Pace, Via dei Coronari — are lined with Renaissance and Baroque buildings that have been converted into boutique hotel, restaurants, and antique shops. The scale is intimate; no building towers above four or five stories.
The neighbourhood's dining scene is split. The restaurants directly on the piazza are tourist traps — overpriced and underwhelming. But walk one block in any direction and you find some of Rome's best trattorias: Ristorante Il Convivio Troiani, Cul de Sac wine bar, and the legendary supplì at Pizzeria La Montecarlo.
This is Rome's most walkable neighbourhood. The Pantheon is 5 minutes east, Campo de' Fiori 5 minutes south, Castel Sant'Angelo 10 minutes northwest, and the Tiber 3 minutes west. No car, bus, or metro needed — just comfortable shoes.

A family-run pensione one block from the piazza with clean, unfussy rooms and an unbeatable price-to-location ratio. No frills, but the warmth of the family who runs it and the 60-second walk to Bernini's fountains make it a perennial favourite.
Piazza di Pasquino — Near Piazza Navona
A design hotel in a 17th-century palazzo where the 'rough' aesthetic means exposed brick, vintage furniture, and art-directed imperfection. The cocktail bar is excellent, and Piazza Navona is visible from the upper-floor windows.

Excellent — arguably the best. You're central to every major sight, the evening atmosphere is magical, and the surrounding streets have superb restaurants once you step off the piazza itself.
The ones directly on the square are overpriced and mediocre. Walk one block to Via del Governo Vecchio or Via della Pace for dramatically better food at lower prices. Locals never eat on the piazza itself.
About 25 minutes on foot (2 km), passing through some of Rome's most scenic streets. Bus 87 also connects them directly.
The piazza itself can be lively until midnight with street performers and outdoor dining. Hotel on the surrounding side streets (Via della Pace, Via dei Coronari) are quieter while still being steps away.
