Fira sits at the top of the caldera's most central section, connected to the old port below by a cable car (and historically by 588 steps or donkey — both still available). The town has a more urban energy than Oia: more shops, more restaurants, better transport connections, and a nightlife scene that runs well past midnight. This makes it a better base for visitors planning to explore the whole island rather than simply settling into one clifftop village.
The hotels in Fira divide into two clear categories: caldera-rim properties with dramatic cliff views, and inland hotels with more modest outlooks but better value. The rim hotels — Dana Villas, Cosmopolitan Suites, Volcano View, and Ambassador Aegean among them — offer some of Santorini's best views at prices 20–40% below comparable Oia properties. The cave-hotel architecture is less developed here than in Oia, but the raw caldera drama is equally present.
Fira's main shopping street (25th March Street) runs parallel to the caldera rim and connects to the pedestrian paths that lead to Firostefani and Imerovigli to the north. Oia is 12 km away by road — about 25 minutes by car or 30–40 minutes by bus. The bus station in central Fira connects to Perissa, Perivolos, Kamari, and most other island points.
The Old Port below Fira (Fira's Skala) is where cruise ships tender passengers and ferries once docked. It's now primarily a tourist attraction — the climb up (or cable car ride) remains a popular arrival experience for cruise passengers. The new ferry port at Athinios, 5 km south, handles all modern ferry traffic.
For food, Fira has a broader and arguably more diverse dining scene than Oia — the concentration of restaurants per square metre is higher, and prices are slightly more competitive. Argo Restaurant on the caldera rim is consistently excellent, and the bar scene around Erythrou Stavrou Street is lively without becoming oppressive.
Budget to mid-range travellers will find considerably better options in Fira than in Oia or Imerovigli. Properties a street or two back from the caldera rim offer comfortable, well-located accommodation for €80–150/night in shoulder season — a fraction of caldera-rim prices.
