Family travel in Mykonos requires deliberate selection. The island's famous image — glamorous adults, beach clubs, nightlife — is real, but it occupies only a portion of the island's geography. The south coast bays, particularly Ornos, Agios Ioannis, and Kalafatis, have a genuinely different character: family-friendly restaurants, calm sheltered beaches, and hotels that actively accommodate children.
Santa Marina Resort in Ornos is the standout family option — a full resort with beach access, kids' facilities, multiple restaurants, and a property scale that allows children to move freely without disrupting other guests. The Mykonos Grand at Agios Ioannis is the quietest large-hotel option, with a sheltered beach and a calmer atmosphere than any property near Mykonos Town.
Practical family considerations: the meltemi wind affects beaches most strongly in July–August, but Ornos and Agios Ioannis are sheltered from the worst of it. The island's roads are narrow, winding, and busy in peak season — a car or ATV is useful but requires careful driving. Mykonos Town is manageable with older children but pushchair-hostile. The pedestrian lanes are narrow cobblestone.
The Mykonos archaeological site on the island of Delos — accessible by a 30-minute boat from the Mykonos Town waterfront — is excellent for families with school-age children. One of the best-preserved ancient Greek cities in the world, it includes stunning mosaics, temples to Apollo, and an evocative Theatre Quarter. The trip itself (open water between the islands) is exciting for children.
Family-friendly restaurants are concentrated in Ornos, Agios Ioannis, and Kalafatis. The Mykonos Town tavernas in the lanes away from the nightlife strip are good choices for families in the evening. The beach tavernas at Agios Sostis and Fokos (reached by jeep) are excellent for relaxed family lunches.
Budget consideration: Mykonos is expensive for families. Four nights at a family room in Ornos in peak season, with food and activities, will cost €3,000–5,000 for a family of four at the mid-range level. June and September reduce this significantly.
