Şişli encompasses several distinct sub-districts that offer different Istanbul experiences. Nişantaşı, the southern part of Şişli, is Istanbul's answer to London's Mayfair or Paris's 8th arrondissement — a neighbourhood of fashion houses, art galleries, excellent restaurants, and the quiet confidence that comes from being genuinely wealthy in a city of contrasts. The streets around Teşvikiye Mosque and Abdi İpekçi Caddesi are lined with Turkish designer boutiques (Vakko, Beymen, local independent designers) and the restaurants here are some of Istanbul's best, largely unknown to tourists but excellent.
Harbiye, adjacent to Nişantaşı, houses Istanbul's major exhibition venues — the Lütfi Kırdar International Convention and Exhibition Centre and the Türk Telekom Arena (Galatasaray's stadium). Hotels in Harbiye cater primarily to the conference and concert audiences these venues attract, offering competitive rates and practical location with metro access.
Mecidiyeköy and Levent, further north on the Metro M2, are Şişli's modern business districts — towers of finance and technology companies, with hotels that serve corporate travellers but offer little for leisure visitors. The Kanyon and Akmerkez malls in this area are excellent for shopping.
For leisure travellers, Nişantaşı is Şişli's draw. The neighbourhood's restaurant scene is genuinely excellent — Mikla-adjacent modern Turkish cuisine at Muza, excellent breakfast cafes, and the Istanbul literary and artistic community that has made Teşvikiye one of the city's most stimulating neighbourhoods. The St. Regis Istanbul, on the Nişantaşı/Şişli border, is the neighbourhood's finest hotel address.
