Hotel Tipping Etiquette Around the World: A Country-by-Country Guide

Why Tipping Matters (And Why It's Confusing)

Tipping is one of the most anxiety-inducing aspects of travel. Get it wrong and you risk offending staff — either by tipping too little, or in some cultures, by tipping at all. The rules change dramatically from country to country, and even from hotel to hotel. This guide cuts through the confusion.

The United States & Canada

Tipping is expected and essentially mandatory in North America:

  • Housekeeping: $3-5 per night (leave daily, not just at checkout)
  • Bellhop: $2-5 per bag
  • Concierge: $5-20 depending on the request
  • Room service: 15-20% (check if gratuity is already included)
  • Valet parking: $3-5 when car is returned
  • Hotel restaurant: 18-22% of the bill

Europe

Tipping culture varies significantly across Europe. In the UK, rounding up or 10-12% in restaurants is standard, but hotel housekeeping tipping is less common. In France and Italy, service is often included ('service compris'). In Germany and Austria, rounding up is customary. Scandinavian countries rarely expect tips. For first-time European visitors, the key is research before each country.

Asia & the Middle East

Japan considers tipping insulting — don't do it. In China, tipping isn't traditional but is becoming accepted in international hotels. Thailand and Indonesia appreciate small tips (20-50 baht / 10,000-20,000 rupiah). In Dubai and the Middle East, service charges are often included, but additional tips of 10-15% are appreciated in restaurants.

When and How to Tip

The mechanics matter as much as the amount. For housekeeping, leave cash on the pillow or desk with a note each day — different staff clean your room on different days. For bellhops, tip when bags are delivered. For concierges, tip after the service is performed, especially for hard-to-get reservations.

Digital Tipping: The 2026 Trend

Cash-free tipping is growing. Some hotels now offer QR codes for digital tips that go directly to staff. This is especially useful if you've forgotten to carry small denominations. However, in many destinations, cash is still preferred — especially in developing economies where staff may not have digital banking.
