The Secret Hotels Don't Advertise
Hotels would rather sell a room at a discount than let it sit empty. The rack rate (published price) is almost always negotiable, especially for independent and boutique properties. The key is knowing when, how, and whom to ask. These nine strategies have been tested by frequent travellers and hotel industry insiders.
1. Call the Hotel Directly
Booking platforms take 15–25% commission. When you call the hotel directly and mention a rate you've found online, many will match or beat it to avoid paying the commission. Ask: 'I found this rate on Booking.com — can you do better if I book directly?' The answer is frequently yes, sometimes with added perks like breakfast or late checkout.
2. Book During Shoulder Season
The most powerful negotiation tool is timing. Hotels that charge £400 in July may accept £200 in November. Shoulder season (the weeks either side of peak) often delivers 80% of the peak experience at 50% of the price. Combine this with a direct booking call and you have serious leverage.
3. Ask for the 'Best Available Rate'
This magic phrase signals to reservations staff that you're price-flexible. The 'best available rate' is often lower than what's listed online and may include room categories above standard. It's different from the 'lowest rate' (which gets you the worst room). Best available rate asks the hotel to do its best within their current inventory.
4–9: Extended Stays, Loyalty, and Package Deals
Request a discount for 3+ night stays (often 10–15% off). Join loyalty programmes before booking — even free tiers sometimes unlock member rates. Ask about packages that bundle spa treatments or dining credits. Book far ahead for peak dates but last-minute for off-peak. Travel Tuesday and Wednesday for the lowest city hotel rates. And finally: always be polite. Hotel staff have discretion, and pleasant guests get the best treatment.
