How to Get Late Checkout at Hotels: A Complete Guide
The noon checkout is one of travel's cruelest customs. Your flight isn't until 7pm, the city has a full afternoon of things to see, and yet you're wrestling your suitcase out of the room at 11:45am. Late checkout is the solution — and it's more available than most guests realise.
When to Ask
Timing is everything. At booking: mention late checkout in the special requests field — it plants the seed. At check-in: ask casually if late checkout might be possible. The evening before: call the front desk the night before departure and ask again. The closer to checkout, the better the hotel can assess availability.
The best time to secure late checkout is the evening before, around 8-9pm. By then, the hotel knows the next day's arrival pattern and can assess whether your room is needed for an incoming guest.
Who Gets It Free
Loyalty programme elites: Most major chains guarantee late checkout for mid-tier and above status members. Marriott Bonvoy Gold/Platinum gets 2pm checkout. Hilton Honors Gold/Diamond gets similar. IHG Rewards and World of Hyatt both offer late checkout to elite members.
Credit card holders: Premium travel credit cards (Amex Platinum, Chase Sapphire Reserve) often include hotel elite status that grants late checkout automatically. It's one of the most underused card benefits.
Slow days: Sunday and Monday departures are the easiest days to get complimentary late checkout, as hotels are often less busy. Friday and Saturday departures (with weekend arrivals coming) are the hardest.
Paid Late Checkout
If complimentary isn't available, many hotels offer paid late checkout — typically 50% of the room rate for an extension to 4-6pm. This can be excellent value if the alternative is wandering the city with your luggage for 6 hours or paying for a full extra night.
Some hotels now offer hourly rates for late departure through apps like Dayuse or BYHOURS. You pay for just the extra hours you need, which can be more economical than the hotel's own late checkout fee.
Alternative Solutions
- Luggage storage — almost every hotel will store your bags for free after checkout. Explore the city unencumbered and collect them before your transfer.
- Day-use lounge — some upscale hotels offer access to a shower and lounge area for departing guests, even after checkout.
- Pool or spa access — some resorts allow post-checkout access to the pool or spa area. Ask at the front desk — the worst they can say is no.
