Hotel Gym Etiquette: An Unwritten Rules Guide

Hotel gyms exist in a strange social space. They're shared by business travellers doing intense 5am sessions, holiday guests attempting a guilt-reducing jog, and people who wandered in because the gym was next to the pool. The unwritten rules that keep this ecosystem functional are worth knowing.

The Golden Rules

Wipe down everything. This should be universal, but hotel gyms are particularly sensitive to it. You're sharing equipment with strangers who are paying a premium to be here. The spray and paper towels exist for a reason — use them after every machine and bench.

Re-rack your weights. Hotel gym dumbbells live in a chaotic state of disorder at the best of times. Returning them to their proper slots is basic courtesy. The 20kg dumbbell does not belong on the 5kg peg.

Share equipment during peak times. Hotel gyms are small. If someone is waiting for the only squat rack or cable machine, offer to alternate sets. Most hotel gyms have 2-4 treadmills — don't monopolise one for 90 minutes when others are waiting.

Peak Times to Avoid (or Target)

Business hotel gyms peak at 6-7am (pre-meeting workouts) and 5-7pm (post-meeting decompression). The sweet spot for a quiet session is mid-morning (9-11am) when most guests are at meetings or sightseeing. Weekends are generally quieter — holiday guests tend to sleep in.

Resort hotel gyms are busiest in the early morning (the "exercise before the pool" crowd) and late afternoon. Midday is usually dead — everyone is at the beach.

What Most Hotel Gyms Get Wrong

The three most common complaints about hotel gyms: (1) not enough free weights (most have a limited dumbbell range that stops at 20kg), (2) broken or poorly maintained equipment, and (3) inadequate ventilation. If a good gym is important to your stay, check recent guest reviews specifically about the fitness centre before booking.

Some hotels now partner with local gyms to offer guest passes, which is a much better solution than trying to do a serious workout with hotel equipment. Equinox Hotel takes it furthest — the entire property is designed around fitness.

Packing for Hotel Gym Sessions

  • Resistance bands — they weigh nothing and solve the "no heavy dumbbells" problem.
  • A jump rope — instant cardio without needing a treadmill.
  • Wireless earbuds — hotel gym music is universally terrible.
  • Your own towel — hotel gym towels are often the thinnest items in the property.
