Hotel Check-In Secrets — Early Arrival, Late Checkout & Free Upgrades

The moments around hotel check-in and checkout are when the guest experience is most malleable. A polite request at the right time can mean the difference between a standard room and a suite, an early arrival or a boring wait in the lobby. Here's what actually works.

Early Check-In

Standard check-in is typically 3pm. If you arrive at 9am after a red-eye flight, here's the protocol:

  • 1.Email ahead (24-48 hours before). "We'll be arriving around 9am — is there any possibility of early check-in?" This gives them time to plan room assignments.
  • 2.Be willing to pay. Many hotels offer guaranteed early check-in for $50-100. Worth it after a long flight.
  • 3.Use the hotel facilities. If the room isn't ready, most good hotels will store your bags, let you use the pool or spa, and provide a welcome drink. Ask rather than assume.
  • 4.Tuesday and Wednesday arrivals have the best chance of early rooms — the hotel is least occupied and turnover from weekday checkout is earlier.

Late Checkout

Standard checkout is typically 11am-12pm. Here's how to extend it:

  • Loyalty status is king here. Most hotel programs guarantee late checkout (1-4pm) at elite status levels. This alone can justify program loyalty.
  • Ask at check-in, not at checkout. "Would it be possible to have a late checkout of 2pm?" The earlier they know, the easier it is to accommodate.
  • Sunday checkouts are easiest — business hotels are less occupied on Sundays, so there's less pressure to flip rooms.

Room Upgrades — What Works

Let's be honest about what works and what doesn't:

  • Works: Booking direct (hotels reward this), loyalty status, celebrating occasions (mention it when booking), arriving late when rooms are more likely available, the "day-of upgrade" option many hotels offer at check-in at reduced rates.
  • Doesn't work: Tipping the front desk (this isn't the movies), being demanding, name-dropping, threatening bad reviews. Politeness beats everything.
