The Best Hotels Across the Greek Islands 2026 — Beyond Santorini and Mykonos

Greece has over 200 inhabited islands, each with its own character, cuisine, and rhythm. Yet most hotel searches begin and end with Santorini and Mykonos — two exceptional destinations, but hardly representative of an archipelago that spans from the Ionian Sea to the Turkish coast.

This guide explores the wider Greek island hotel scene, from Crete's south coast hideaways to the Cycladic simplicity of Naxos, the Venetian elegance of Corfu, and the medieval drama of Rhodes. If you've done Santorini and Mykonos (or want to skip the crowds entirely), this is where to look next.

Crete — The Island That Has Everything

Greece's largest island could be a country in its own right. The north coast has beach resorts and the charming Venetian harbour of Chania. The south coast has dramatic gorges, hidden beaches, and small hotels with genuine character. Crete's food scene is arguably the best in Greece — local olive oil, wild herbs, slow-cooked lamb, and wine from indigenous grapes. The hotel scene ranges from rustic agriturismo to sleek boutique properties in restored Venetian mansions.

Rhodes — Medieval Grandeur

Rhodes Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site — a walled medieval city that's one of the best-preserved in the Mediterranean. Staying within the walls feels like stepping into another century, with converted medieval buildings offering atmospheric accommodation. The rest of the island has excellent beaches and a growing collection of luxury resorts, particularly on the quieter west coast.

Corfu — The Venetian Jewel

Corfu's Italian influence gives it a distinct personality among Greek islands. The Liston arcade in Corfu Town could be in Bologna, and the northeast coast's gentle green hills feel almost English. Hotel highlights include converted Venetian estates, clifftop properties overlooking Albania, and some of Greece's most refined boutique hotels. The Durrell family connection adds literary charm.

The Cyclades Beyond the Classics

Naxos is the Cyclades' largest island, with better beaches than Santorini and a fraction of the tourists. The interior has mountain villages, ancient temples, and exceptional local cheese. Paros has emerged as a sophisticated alternative to Mykonos — great beach clubs, excellent restaurants, and stylish hotels without the intensity. Milos is the rising star — volcanic landscapes, jaw-dropping beach coves, and a hotel scene that's just beginning to mature.

Practical Island-Hopping Tips

  • Ferries are your friend. The Greek ferry network connects most islands. Book through FerryHopper or directly with Blue Star Ferries. High-speed catamarans are faster but rougher in wind.
  • Combine island groups. The Cyclades are well-connected to each other. Crete connects to the Cyclades. The Dodecanese (Rhodes, Kos) connect to each other. The Ionian islands (Corfu, Kefalonia) are a separate group best accessed from western Greece.
  • Book early for August. Greece essentially goes on holiday in August, and islands fill up with domestic tourists. Book 3-6 months ahead for August stays.
