Best Ski Hotels & Winter Sports Resorts 2026
The perfect ski hotel does three things exceptionally well: it puts you on the slopes quickly, it warms you up beautifully when you return, and it feeds you the kind of food that makes a week in the mountains feel like a culinary holiday too. Here are the properties that nail all three.
The Alps
Zermatt, Switzerland: The Matterhorn backdrop is unbeatable. The Omnia is a design-forward lodge carved into rock with views that stop conversation. Mont Cervin Palace is old-school grandeur. Zermatt is car-free, adding to the Alpine charm.
Courchevel, France: The most luxurious ski resort in the world. Courchevel 1850 houses the Airelles, Cheval Blanc, and Aman Le Mélézin — any of which would be a destination even without skiing. The Three Valleys ski area is Europe's largest.
Lech am Arlberg, Austria: The royal family's favourite resort. Hotel Post Lech and Kristiania combine Austrian warmth with excellent ski access. The Arlberg area offers world-class powder and famously friendly village atmosphere.
Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy: Host of the 2026 Winter Olympics. Cristallo Resort and Rosapetra Spa Resort offer Italian elegance. The Dolomites' dramatic peaks add visual drama that the rounder Alps can't match. Italian mountain food — polenta, speck, strudel — is a revelation.
Japan
Niseko, Hokkaido: The lightest, driest powder snow on earth draws skiers from around the world. The Green Leaf Niseko Village and Aman Niseko (opening soon) combine Japanese hospitality with extreme skiing. After a day on the slopes, soak in a natural onsen — there's nothing like it in European skiing.
Hakuba and Myoko: Less touristy alternatives to Niseko with equally excellent snow. Traditional Japanese ryokans near the slopes offer tatami rooms, kaiseki dinners, and onsen baths — a completely different ski trip experience.
North America
Aspen, Colorado: The most glamorous ski town in America. The Little Nell is the only ski-in/ski-out five-star property. Aspen's restaurants, galleries, and après-ski scene rival any resort in the Alps.
Whistler, BC: North America's largest ski area. The Fairmont Chateau Whistler and Nita Lake Lodge offer Canadian mountain luxury. The village atmosphere is walkable and lively.
What Ski-In/Ski-Out Really Means
True ski-in/ski-out means you can click into your bindings at the hotel door and ski directly onto a run. Many hotels claim this label loosely — "ski-adjacent" or "near the lifts" isn't the same thing. Check the actual distance to the nearest lift or run before booking, especially if you're with kids or beginners who don't want a long traverse.
