Best Hotels for Tall People: Beds, Showers, and What to Request

Best Hotels for Tall People: Beds, Showers, and What to Request

If you're over 6'2" (188cm), hotel rooms can feel like they were designed for a different species. Beds that leave your feet dangling, showerheads at chest height, and bathroom mirrors that cut off at your chin. The struggle is real — but some hotels get it right.

The Bed Problem

Standard hotel beds are typically 200cm (6'7") long — fine for most guests, but a tight fit if you're 190cm+ and like to stretch out. The solution: request a king-size bed when booking (kings are usually 200-210cm) and specify that you need the longest bed available. Some hotels, particularly in Scandinavia and the Netherlands, offer beds up to 220cm.

Japanese and Southeast Asian budget hotels are often the tightest fit — bed lengths of 195cm aren't uncommon. If you're tall and heading to Asia, splurge on international-brand hotels or Western-standard properties.

The Shower Problem

Fixed showerheads at 180cm height are the bane of tall travellers. The best hotels install rainfall showerheads at 210cm+, or offer adjustable-height shower rails. Walk-in showers are almost always better than bathtub/shower combos — more headroom, more space, and no contorting under a low ceiling.

When booking, check room photos carefully. Modern hotel designs with walk-in rain showers are your friend. Older hotels with bathtub-only bathrooms are often the most cramped.

Countries That Cater to Tall Guests

Netherlands: The tallest nation on earth averages 175cm for women and 183cm for men. Dutch hotels are designed accordingly — beds, doorframes, and bathrooms account for height.

Scandinavia: Nordic hotels generally have spacious, modern rooms with generous bed sizes and high ceilings. IKEA-influence interior design means functional, well-proportioned spaces.

USA & Canada: King beds are standard at most chain hotels, and American room sizes tend to be generous. Showerheads are often adjustable.

Tips for Tall Travellers

  • Request the largest bed category at booking and add a note about your height. Many hotels can arrange extra-long mattresses with advance notice.
  • Ask for a high-floor room in newer properties — renovated rooms tend to have updated bathrooms with better shower setups.
  • Check the airline seat pitch before you book the hotel — the flight is often worse than the room for tall travellers.
