Zadar's old town occupies a narrow peninsula jutting into the Adriatic, its Venetian and Roman layers visible everywhere — in the Roman forum columns built into church walls, the Venetian land gate with its winged lion relief, and the 16th-century fortifications that withstood numerous sieges. The city is less touristed than Dubrovnik and Split but arguably more genuinely Croatian in character, with excellent restaurants, market stalls selling local fig brandy and prsut, and a relaxed waterfront sunset culture. Hotels in Zadar old town offer some of the best value for money on the Dalmatian coast.
