Castelvecchio is Verona's most impressive fortress, a 14th-century Scaligeri stronghold on the Adige river whose seven towers, moated outer wall, and connecting Scaligero bridge form the city's most dramatic medieval ensemble. The castle now houses the Museo di Castelvecchio, an outstanding collection of medieval and Renaissance art brilliantly displayed in a 1960s renovation by architect Carlo Scarpa.
