Portmeirion is one of the most extraordinary and eccentric architectural creations in Britain, a fantasy Italian village designed and built by architect Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1978 on a private peninsula above the Dwyryd estuary in Snowdonia. The colourful Mediterranean buildings, woodland walks, and hotel make it a genuine day out, and the village achieved cult status as the filming location of the 1960s TV series The Prisoner. Hotels in Portmeirion itself are unique and atmospheric, while hotels in Porthmadog and the surrounding Snowdonia coast provide comfortable alternatives.
