The Torre del Mangia rising from the side of the Palazzo Pubblico at the foot of Piazza del Campo is one of the tallest medieval towers in Italy at 88 metres, built between 1338 and 1348 and named after its first bell-ringer who was legendary for eating away his wages. The climb of 400 steps is rewarded with panoramic views across the entire city and the rolling Sienese countryside of the Crete Senesi beyond.
