Vernaccia di San Gimignano is Italy's oldest DOC wine, a crisp white wine made from the Vernaccia grape cultivated on the limestone hillsides surrounding the town since at least 1276, when the town statutes first recorded it. The Vernaccia di San Gimignano Wine Museum in the town introduces visitors to the wine's extraordinary history, and numerous cantinas in the vineyards below the walls offer tastings and cellar tours.
