The Portara is the marble doorway of an unfinished 6th-century BC temple of Apollo that stands alone on the small islet of Palatia connected to Naxos Town by a causeway, its monumental frame perfectly framing sunsets over the Aegean in one of the most iconic images in the Greek islands. The temple was never completed, and the lone gateway — formed from four marble blocks each weighing 20 tonnes — has stood for 2,500 years as a testament to ancient ambition.
