Fanad Head Lighthouse on the northern coast of Donegal is one of Ireland's most dramatically situated lighthouses, its white tower perched on a rocky headland above crashing Atlantic surf at the entrance to Lough Swilly — the second-longest fjord in Ireland — with views across to the Malin Head peninsula and the Inishowen. The lighthouse was built in 1817 following the wreck of HMS Saldanha nearby and now offers accommodation in the keeper's cottages.
