The Samaria Gorge in the White Mountains of western Crete is Europe's longest gorge, a 16-kilometre descent through breathtaking scenery from the Omalos plateau to the Libyan Sea, passing through the Iron Gates — a section just 3 metres wide with 300-metre walls on either side. The walk takes 4-7 hours and is one of the great hiking experiences of the Mediterranean.
