Mont Blanc at 4,808 metres is the highest peak in Western Europe, its snow and ice summit visible from the Chamonix Valley 2,000 metres below and the supreme objective for Alpine mountaineers from across the world since the first ascent in 1786. The summit is reached by qualified alpinists in a two-day ascent, while the Aiguille du Midi cable car provides access to 3,842 metres for non-climbers.
