Mount Otemanu at 727 metres is the dramatic twin-peaked volcanic spine of Bora Bora, its jagged basalt summit rising from the centre of the island above the turquoise lagoon and the barrier reef and providing the iconic backdrop to every overwater bungalow photograph taken on the island. The extinct volcano is climbable by experienced hikers with a guide but most visitors admire it from the lagoon on snorkelling excursions. Hotels on Bora Bora — particularly the overwater bungalow resorts of the Motu Piti Aau and Matira Peninsula — frame Mount Otemanu in their views.
The Four Seasons occupies its own motu with 107 overwater and beach bungalows of extraordinary refinement — plunge pools, glass floors, direct lagoon access, and unobstructed views of Mount Otemanu across the lagoon. The resort's Te Manu Spa, multiple restaurants including Tere Nui, and the sheer quality of service infrastructure represent Four Seasons at its most masterful. The top global honeymoon address, and entirely deserving of it.
The St. Regis on Motu Ome'e is defined by its exceptional Royal Overwater Villa — one of the world's great hotel suites, a 2,100-square-foot thatched palace above the lagoon with its own butler, pool, and cinema. For the other 87 overwater and garden villas, the 24-hour butler service, outstanding Lagoon restaurant, and Miri Miri Spa create an experience of consistent, personalised luxury.
Set on the largest lagoon on the island's main land-mass, the Conrad occupies a hillside site whose overwater bungalows and ridgeline suites command some of the most dramatic Otemanu views of any resort. The infinity pool, Iriatai Spa, and the resort's thoughtful inclusion of Polynesian cultural programming make it a destination with genuine substance beyond its gorgeous setting.
The InterContinental Le Thalasso on Motu To'opua is arguably the most innovative resort in Bora Bora — powered partly by Deep Seawater Air Conditioning, its over-the-water spa uses seawater drawn from 900 metres for unique thalassotherapy treatments. The overwater suites here are among the island's most spacious, and the lagoon-view dining is exceptional.
Le Méridien occupies its own motu directly across from Mount Otemanu with a lagoon on its doorstep and a distinctive feature: a sea turtle lagoon where the resort participates in a conservation and release programme. The overwater bungalows here are excellent value by Bora Bora standards, with strong lagoon views and a more relaxed atmosphere than some neighbours.
The Le Moana is Bora Bora's most charming smaller resort — 64 bungalows set directly on Matira Beach, the island's finest public beach. While less ornate than the motu-island mega-resorts, the Le Moana's Polynesian atmosphere, direct beach access, and genuinely competitive rates make it the island's best value luxury proposition.
