The Rocher de la Vierge — Virgin's Rock — is Biarritz's most iconic landmark, a dramatic offshore sea stack connected to the cliff by an iron walkway and topped by a statue of the Virgin Mary, offering spectacular views of the Atlantic breakers, the Pyrenees on clear days, and the rugged Basque coastline in both directions. Napoleon III commissioned the connecting walkway in the 1860s, and the rock has been the symbol of Biarritz ever since.
