Strasbourg calls itself the Capital of Christmas, and its Christkindelsmärik is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe. Eight themed markets are spread across the historic centre, with a 30-metre tree on Place Kléber. Expect cold, damp December weather and early dark, which suits the lights.
What's on
- Strasbourg Christmas markets (Christkindelsmärik and seven other markets) — Place Broglie (Christkindelsmärik), Place Kléber, around the Cathedral, Place du Temple Neuf, Petite France, Rohan Terrace and Fish Market square, Place Grimmeissen, Square Louise Weiss. Opens Friday 27 November 2026 (official). In 2025 the markets ran 26 November to 24 December, so expect them to close on or around 24 December.
- Grand Sapin (30-metre Christmas tree) light and music show — Place Kléber. Daily through the market period. In the 2024 season the light and music show ran 4 pm to 9 pm, with lights only from 10 pm to midnight. City illuminations began on 21 November in 2025.
Dates and times change from year to year, so check the organiser's listing before you travel.
Where to stay
- Place Kléber and the Grande Île: The tree, the Cathedral market and Place Broglie are all within a short walk, so you can go back to the hotel to warm up between visits.
- Petite France: Canal-side streets with their own market, a little quieter at night than the squares around Place Kléber.
- Krutenau and the Neustadt: Residential neighbourhoods at the edge of the centre with cafés and restaurants, about 10 to 15 minutes on foot from the main markets.
