About This Guide

New Year is Japan's biggest holiday, and in Hakone it is quiet and traditional. At midnight there is a free fireworks display over Lake Ashi at Hakone Shrine, and on 1 January people make their first shrine visit of the year. On 2 and 3 January the Hakone Ekiden university relay race climbs the mountain.

Where to see in the New Year

  • Hakone Shrine New Year fireworks — Lake Ashi in front of Hakone Shrine, Moto-Hakone. Midnight on 1 January, about 15 minutes and roughly 1,000 fireworks, free to watch.
  • Hatsumode (first shrine visit of the year) — Hakone Shrine and other shrines in Hakone. From 1 January and the days following.
  • Hakone Ekiden (Tokyo to Hakone college relay) — The route climbs from Hakone-Yumoto to the Lake Ashi finish near Hakone Shrine on day one. 2 and 3 January each year.
