The Zürichpass (Day Pass from CHF 17) covers all trams, buses, S-Bahn trains, boats, and the funicular — everything including the Uetliberg S-Bahn and lake ferries. Worth it immediately if you plan more than three journeys.
Lake swimming is free at the city's 18 public Badis (bathing establishments) around the Zürichsee from May to September — the Seebad Enge, Seebad Utoquai, and Frauenbad Stadthausquai (women-only, with excellent roof access) are the most atmospheric. A genuine Zurich summer ritual.
Zurich's best street food is the Albisgüetli Thai (claimed to be Europe's best Thai restaurant for 30 years) and the Tibits vegetarian buffet on Seefeldstrasse — both are local institutions that cost a fraction of Zurich's notoriously expensive restaurant scene.
Day trips from Zurich: Lucerne is 45 minutes by fast train (extraordinary setting), Interlaken and the Jungfraujoch 2 hours, Bern 55 minutes, and Basel under an hour. The Swiss Travel Pass covers all these journeys and is worth buying for stays of 4+ days.
Fondue and Zürcher Geschnetzeltes (veal in cream sauce with rösti) are the essential local dishes — eat them at Kronenhalle (Zurich's most storied restaurant, decorated with original Picasso, Chagall, and Miró works) or the more affordable Hiltl (the world's oldest vegetarian restaurant).

Altstadt
Zurich's best-regarded hostel in a central Altstadt location, offering private rooms alongside dorms with excellent cleanliness standards, a helpful team, and easy access to the Niederdorf bar quarter. By far the best budget option in the city centre.
Uetliberg
An historic hotel perched on the Uetliberg summit (869m) above the city, reachable by a 20-minute S-Bahn train with rooms overlooking the entire Swiss Plateau from the Alps to the Jura. The only hotel in Switzerland where you can watch the sun rise over the Alps from your bed and be in central Zurich by 8 AM.
Altstadt
A labyrinthine conversion of nine medieval townhouses in the heart of the Altstadt, with rooms spanning from cave-like medieval cellars to a contemporary glass penthouse — each completely different in character. One of Switzerland's most original hotel experiences and a genuine labour of architectural love.
Langstrasse
A provocatively designed boutique hotel in Zurich's most vibrant neighbourhood with circus-themed interiors, a rooftop sauna open to the sky, and rooms priced well below the city average. The best base for accessing Zurich's nightlife, independent restaurants, and the creative industries quarter.
Altstadt
A pleasant three-star boutique in the Altstadt with well-maintained rooms, a good breakfast, and a central location steps from the Lindenhügel and the Fraumünster church. Consistently well-reviewed for value and staff friendliness.
Hauptbahnhof
A grand 1876 hotel facing the Hauptbahnhof with a complete restoration that has preserved the Belle Époque lobby while adding a superb Japanese restaurant (Masa) and contemporary rooms. Outstanding value for a five-star so close to the central station.
