Amalfi is the best base for exploring the full coast by ferry — boats run regularly east to Salerno and west to Positano. It is more affordable than Positano but less dramatically beautiful. The town gets very crowded at midday in July and August.
The Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea with its striped Arab-Norman facade, the Piazza Duomo fountain and café terraces, the Valle dei Mulini paper mills (with a working paper museum), the SITA bus connections along the coast, and the ferry terminal serving Positano and Salerno.
