Pintxos etiquette: at a good bar, go in the evening from 7:30 PM, order a txakoli wine, choose your pintxos, eat quickly, settle your bill, and move to the next bar. Repeat six times. This is the actual dining structure of the city.
To eat at Arzak, Mugaritz, or Akelarre, you need to book 2–4 months in advance (sometimes more for special occasions). These are world's-best-50 restaurants and do not have walk-in availability.
La Concha beach is free and the water is swimmable from June through September. The island of Santa Clara is reachable by water taxi from the beach — a wonderful €4 return trip.
The Monte Urgull and Monte Igueldo hikes offer spectacular panoramas over the bay and are entirely free. Monte Igueldo also has a vintage amusement park at the top that feels gloriously anachronistic.
San Sebastián's Film Festival in late September is one of the world's premier cinema events — the city fills with industry and film lovers, and free screenings are held in Plaza de la Constitución. Worth planning a trip around.
