The car ferry between Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio is an experience in itself — buy a ticket and ride the short crossing without a car simply for the view. The 10-minute crossing costs €5 and the lake panorama is exceptional.
For Milan day-trippers, Varenna is the only lakeside village directly accessible by fast regional train from Milan Centrale (50 minutes) — book a morning train, walk the passeggiata and Villa Monastero, lunch at Hotel du Lac's terrace, and return by evening.
Boat hire: renting a small motorboat for the day (€100–€180) from Lido di Lenno, Varenna, or Bellagio is the definitive Como experience. Visit the Villa Balbianello, Isola Comacina, and hidden coves that are inaccessible by road.
