Halekulani Okinawa — Onna-son (West Coast), Okinawa
Best Overall Luxury Onna-son (West Coast) $$$$ Direct beachfront

1. Halekulani Okinawa

9.4 Wonderful on Booking

Best for: Couples, honeymooners, repeat luxury travellers wanting Okinawa's most polished beachfront resort

The Hawaiian luxury icon's only Asian outpost — a polished beachfront resort on Onna's best stretch of coast.

Halekulani is the highest-rated true luxury resort on Okinawa's main island. It sits on Onna-son's west coast facing Cape Manzamo, with five pools, a serious spa, multiple restaurants and the brand's signature service standards. Rooms are oversized for Japan, all with balconies, most with ocean views. This is the default pick if you want one polished beachfront stay on the main island and budget isn't the primary constraint. Roughly 70 minutes by car from Naha Airport (OKA).

The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa — Nago (Northern Okinawa), Okinawa
Best Resort + Golf Combo Nago (Northern Okinawa) $$$$ Beach shuttle (~5 min drive to Kise Beach)

2. The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa

9.4 Wonderful on Booking

Best for: Couples and golfers who want luxury service plus a Kise Country Club setting, not a barefoot beach base

Hilltop Ritz-Carlton above Kise Country Club — strong on service, golf and onsen, but not directly on the beach.

The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa sits inland on the Kise plateau in Nago, overlooking the Kise Country Club golf course. It is consistently one of the highest-scoring resorts in Okinawa for service and food, with a strong spa, infinity pool and a Ryukyu-influenced design. Important caveat: this is not a barefoot beach resort — the property runs a complimentary shuttle to its private Kise Beach Club a few minutes away. Choose the Ritz if you want top-tier service and golf access; choose Halekulani or Busena Terrace if direct beachfront matters more.

Rosewood Miyakojima — Miyakojima, Okinawa
Best Ultra-Luxury Beach Escape Miyakojima $$$$ Direct beachfront

3. Rosewood Miyakojima

9.5 Exceptional on Booking

Best for: Honeymooners and design-led travellers who want the highest-end beach property in Japan, on the country's best beaches

Rosewood's first Japan resort — ultra-luxury beachfront on Miyakojima, arguably the best beach island in Japan.

Rosewood Miyakojima opened in 2025 on the southern tip of Miyakojima, and it is the most ambitious luxury beach resort to open in Japan in a decade. Pool villas with private plunge pools, a beach club, three restaurants, and the brand's understated service polish. Miyakojima itself has Japan's best beaches — Yonaha Maehama and Sunayama in particular — and is reachable via a 50-minute flight from Naha (OKA) or direct from Tokyo Haneda/Narita. Rates are higher than the main-island resorts, but you're paying for a different (and better) beach product.

The Busena Terrace — Nago (Cape Busena), Okinawa
Best Classic Beach Resort Nago (Cape Busena) $$$$ Private beach

4. The Busena Terrace

9.0 Wonderful on Booking

Best for: Families and couples who want a true private-beach resort with deep food and water-sports programs

Okinawa's classic full-service beach resort on Cape Busena — private beach, multiple restaurants, deep facilities.

Busena Terrace is the long-standing benchmark for a 'true' Okinawa beach holiday. The resort occupies a private cape with its own white-sand beach, glass-bottom boat tours, multiple pools, a serious kids program and one of the best food line-ups on the island. Rooms are dated compared to Halekulani, but the location, beach quality and on-site experience are arguably stronger. Around 80 minutes by car from OKA. The default pick for families wanting a self-contained resort week.

Hyatt Regency Seragaki Island Okinawa — Onna-son (Seragaki Island), Okinawa
Best Private-Island Resort Onna-son (Seragaki Island) $$$$ Direct beachfront (private island bridge)

5. Hyatt Regency Seragaki Island Okinawa

8.9 Excellent on Booking

Best for: Couples and families wanting a self-contained island resort feel without leaving the main island

A modern resort built on its own small island in Onna-son, connected by bridge — beachfront and self-contained.

Hyatt Regency Seragaki occupies a small private island connected to the Onna mainland by a short bridge, giving it a genuine 'island resort' feel that few main-island Okinawa hotels can match. Two-pool layout, walk-out white-sand beach, multiple restaurants, and a strong kids program. Newer than Busena Terrace and a notch below Halekulani in finish, but a strong-value high-end resort. Around 70 minutes by car from OKA.

Iraph Sui, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Miyakojima — Miyakojima (Irabu Island), Okinawa
Best Boutique Beach Resort Miyakojima (Irabu Island) $$$$ Direct beachfront

6. Iraph Sui, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Miyakojima

9.0 Wonderful on Booking

Best for: Couples wanting a smaller, design-led boutique alternative to Rosewood on Miyakojima

Marriott Luxury Collection boutique on Irabu Island — modern Ryukyu design and a quiet beachfront cove.

Iraph Sui sits on Irabu Island, connected to Miyakojima by Japan's longest toll-free bridge. The property is a smaller, calmer, more boutique alternative to Rosewood — fewer rooms, all with ocean views or pools, and a strong food and spa program. The setting is dramatic: dark coral cliffs and turquoise water on a quieter side of the Miyako group. Best for couples who want Miyakojima's beach quality without Rosewood's full-resort scale or rates.

ANA InterContinental Ishigaki Resort — Ishigaki (Yaeyama Islands), Okinawa
Best Yaeyama Base Ishigaki (Yaeyama Islands) $$$ Direct beachfront (Maesato Beach)

7. ANA InterContinental Ishigaki Resort

8.2 Very Good on Booking

Best for: Travellers using a beach resort as a base for diving, island-hopping (Taketomi, Iriomote) and Yaeyama nature

The default Ishigaki resort base — beachfront on Maesato Beach with easy access to Yaeyama island ferries.

ANA InterContinental Ishigaki is the largest and best-equipped resort on Ishigaki, sitting directly on Maesato Beach a short drive from Ishigaki Port (the gateway to Taketomi, Iriomote, and Hateruma) and Ishigaki Airport (ISG). Multiple pools, beach activities, an in-house dive center, and full-service restaurants. Choose this if your trip is primarily about Yaeyama island-hopping, diving and nature rather than pure resort luxury — Rosewood Miyakojima is a notch above for ultra-luxury beach.

Hilton Okinawa Chatan Resort — Chatan (American Village area), Okinawa
Best Family Resort + Lifestyle Base Chatan (American Village area) $$$ Short walk to Sunset Beach (~5 min)

8. Hilton Okinawa Chatan Resort

9.1 Wonderful on Booking

Best for: Families who want pools, walk-out restaurants and shopping more than a remote resort cocoon

Family-friendly Hilton in Chatan — three pools, walk-out to American Village restaurants and Sunset Beach.

Hilton Okinawa Chatan is built around a multi-pool layout (including a long lazy river) and sits a short walk from American Village's restaurants, shops and Sunset Beach. It is the best family lifestyle base on the main island — kids get pools and food choice, parents get a 35-minute drive from OKA and walk-out dining options. Not a private-beach resort: choose Halekulani, Busena Terrace or Hyatt Seragaki if a private beach matters most.

Hotel Orion Motobu Resort & Spa — Motobu (Northern Okinawa), Okinawa
Best Aquarium / Northern Sightseeing Base Motobu (Northern Okinawa) $$$ Short walk to Bise Beach

9. Hotel Orion Motobu Resort & Spa

9.0 Wonderful on Booking

Best for: Families visiting Churaumi Aquarium and northern Okinawa, who want a beachfront resort instead of a city hotel

Beachfront resort right next to Churaumi Aquarium — the natural base for Northern Okinawa sightseeing.

Hotel Orion Motobu sits on the Motobu peninsula adjacent to Churaumi Aquarium and Ocean Expo Park, with a short walk to Bise Beach. It's the smartest base for any trip built around Okinawa's most-visited family attraction. Pools, onsen-style baths, multiple restaurants, and a quieter, more local feel than the Onna resort coast. Around 110 minutes by car from OKA — pair it with a 1–2 night first/last stay closer to the airport.

Hyatt Regency Naha Okinawa — Naha (Capital City), Okinawa
Best First/Last-Night City Pick Naha (Capital City) $$$ City hotel — no beach (≈1.2 mi to nearest)

10. Hyatt Regency Naha Okinawa

8.7 Very Good on Booking

Best for: Travellers wanting a single Naha city stay before heading north or onto a Miyako/Ishigaki flight

Reliable Naha city hotel in Kokusai-dori area — the best first/last-night base before resort coast or outer-island flights.

Hyatt Regency Naha is the most consistent international-standard city hotel in central Naha, a short walk from Kokusai-dori, monorail access, and 25–30 minutes to Naha Airport (OKA). Rooftop pool, full-service breakfast, and proper executive lounge. Use this for a single first or last night to handle food and shopping in Naha — do not anchor a beach holiday here. The point of Okinawa is the resort coast, not the capital.

Where to stay in Okinawa: zone-by-zone guide

Okinawa is a region, not a city. Picking the right zone — main-island resort coast vs. Miyakojima vs. Ishigaki — matters more than picking the right hotel.

Naha (Capital City)

First/last night, food and airport — not a beach base

Naha is the capital, the airport (OKA), and the food/shopping hub via Kokusai-dori and Yui Monorail. It is not where you stay for a beach holiday — there are no real beach resorts in central Naha. Use it for one night to bookend a trip, or as a transit point before flying to Miyako or Ishigaki.

Onna-son / West Coast

Default luxury resort coast

The west coast of the main island, roughly 60–75 minutes from OKA. This is where Halekulani, Hyatt Regency Seragaki and most premium beach resorts sit. Cape Manzamo, snorkeling at Manza Beach, and the best concentration of beachfront hotels on the main island. The default first-time Okinawa base.

Nago / Motobu (North)

Aquarium, families, northern sightseeing

Northern Okinawa, 80–120 minutes from OKA, home to The Ritz-Carlton, Busena Terrace and Hotel Orion Motobu. Anchored by Churaumi Aquarium, Ocean Expo Park, Kouri Island and quieter beaches. Pair this zone with a Naha or Onna stay — don't make it your only base.

Yomitan / Chatan (Mid-Island)

Lifestyle, value, American Village

The mid-island area between Naha and Onna — home to Hilton Okinawa Chatan and Sheraton Sunmarina, plus American Village and Sunset Beach. Best for families wanting walk-out restaurants and shopping rather than a remote resort. 35–45 minutes from OKA.

Miyakojima

Japan's best beaches, ultra-luxury

A 50-minute flight from Naha (or direct from Tokyo HND/NRT). Yonaha Maehama, Sunayama and Aharen are among Japan's best beaches; Rosewood Miyakojima and Iraph Sui anchor the luxury offering. The right pick if beach quality is the trip's top priority.

Ishigaki / Yaeyama Islands

Diving, island-hopping, nature

Ishigaki (ISG) is the gateway to the Yaeyama Islands — Taketomi, Iriomote, Hateruma — reached by ferry from Ishigaki Port. ANA InterContinental Ishigaki anchors the resort offering. Choose Yaeyama for nature, diving and island-hopping rather than pure resort relaxation.

Getting to (and around) Okinawa

Naha Airport (OKA) — the gateway

Almost every trip starts at OKA. JAL, ANA, Solaseed, Peach and Jetstar fly multiple daily routes from Tokyo (HND/NRT), Osaka (KIX/ITM), Nagoya (NGO) and Fukuoka (FUK). Most Onna and Nago resorts arrange airport transfers; otherwise rent a car at OKA or take an airport limousine bus.

Rental car (essential on main island)

Okinawa main island has no rail outside Naha's Yui Monorail. A rental car is effectively required to reach the Onna, Nago, Motobu and Yomitan/Chatan zones. Rent at Naha Airport — international counters are inside the terminal. Driving is on the left, expressway tolls apply on the Okinawa Expressway.

To Miyakojima (Miyako Airport, MMY)

Reach Miyakojima by domestic flight only — no ferry from the main island. JAL, ANA and Solaseed run ~50-minute hops from Naha (OKA) and direct services from Tokyo Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT). Rent a car at MMY; distances between beaches are too far for taxis.

To Ishigaki (ISG) and the Yaeyama Islands

Fly into New Ishigaki Airport (ISG) from OKA, HND, NRT or KIX. From Ishigaki Port, fast ferries run to Taketomi (~10 min), Iriomote (~40 min), Hateruma and Yubu. There is no train or ferry from the main island — flights only.

Naha city: Yui Monorail

Naha's Yui Monorail runs from OKA Airport through Asahibashi, Kokusai-dori, Asato and Shuri — useful only inside the city. It does not connect to any resort coast. A 1-day pass is around ¥800.

Best-time-to-visit summary

Late April–early July and October–early November are the sweet spots: warm enough to swim, fewer typhoons than August. July and August are peak season and most expensive. Typhoon risk runs roughly August through early October.

Okinawa hotels: frequently asked

Which area of Okinawa should I stay in? +

It depends on your trip. For a first beach holiday on the main island, base on the Onna-son west coast (Halekulani, Hyatt Seragaki) — that's where the best beach resorts are concentrated. For families visiting Churaumi Aquarium, base in Motobu or Nago. For lifestyle, walk-out food and shopping, Chatan (American Village) is the smart pick. For Japan's best beaches, fly to Miyakojima. For nature, diving and island-hopping, fly to Ishigaki. Naha is the airport city — use it only as a first/last-night stay, not as a resort base.

Is Okinawa main island or Miyakojima the better beach destination? +

Honest answer: Miyakojima has materially better beaches. Yonaha Maehama, Sunayama and Aharen Beach are among Japan's best — finer sand, clearer water, and lower density than Onna. The trade-off is access (a 50-minute flight from Naha or direct from Tokyo). If beach quality is your top priority and you can fly, do Miyakojima. If you want resort variety, food, sightseeing and easier logistics, do Okinawa main island.

Do I need a rental car in Okinawa? +

On the main island — yes, in almost every case. There is no rail outside the Yui Monorail in central Naha, and the Onna resort coast and Northern Okinawa (Motobu/Nago) are not realistic by bus for a flexible trip. Rent at Naha Airport. On Miyakojima, also yes — distances between beaches are too far for taxis. On Ishigaki, you can ferry-hop without a car if you base near Maesato or Ishigaki Port; otherwise rent.

How far from Naha Airport are the main resort areas? +

Approximate drive times by car: Naha city centre 25–30 min, Chatan / American Village 35–45 min, Onna-son west coast (Halekulani, Hyatt Seragaki) 60–75 min, Cape Busena (Busena Terrace) 75–90 min, Nago / Ritz-Carlton 80–90 min, Motobu / Churaumi Aquarium 100–120 min. Miyakojima and Ishigaki are domestic flights (50–60 min from OKA, plus connections from Tokyo).

When is the best time to visit Okinawa? +

Late April through early July, and October through early November, are the sweet spots — warm enough to swim, fewer typhoons, lower prices than peak August. July and August are peak (and most expensive); the typhoon window runs roughly August–early October. Winter (Dec–Feb) is mild but cool for swimming — better for sightseeing, food and golf than for beaches.

Should I include Naha in my Okinawa itinerary? +

Yes, but as a one-night first or last stay rather than a base. Naha gives you Kokusai-dori food and shopping, Shuri Castle, and the airport. The actual Okinawa experience — beaches, resorts, snorkeling, Churaumi — is on the resort coast or the outer islands. Don't make Naha the centre of an Okinawa trip.
