Which area of Okinawa should I stay in?
+
It depends on your trip. For a first beach holiday on the main island, base on the Onna-son west coast (Halekulani, Hyatt Seragaki) — that's where the best beach resorts are concentrated. For families visiting Churaumi Aquarium, base in Motobu or Nago. For lifestyle, walk-out food and shopping, Chatan (American Village) is the smart pick. For Japan's best beaches, fly to Miyakojima. For nature, diving and island-hopping, fly to Ishigaki. Naha is the airport city — use it only as a first/last-night stay, not as a resort base.
Is Okinawa main island or Miyakojima the better beach destination?
+
Honest answer: Miyakojima has materially better beaches. Yonaha Maehama, Sunayama and Aharen Beach are among Japan's best — finer sand, clearer water, and lower density than Onna. The trade-off is access (a 50-minute flight from Naha or direct from Tokyo). If beach quality is your top priority and you can fly, do Miyakojima. If you want resort variety, food, sightseeing and easier logistics, do Okinawa main island.
Do I need a rental car in Okinawa?
+
On the main island — yes, in almost every case. There is no rail outside the Yui Monorail in central Naha, and the Onna resort coast and Northern Okinawa (Motobu/Nago) are not realistic by bus for a flexible trip. Rent at Naha Airport. On Miyakojima, also yes — distances between beaches are too far for taxis. On Ishigaki, you can ferry-hop without a car if you base near Maesato or Ishigaki Port; otherwise rent.
How far from Naha Airport are the main resort areas?
+
Approximate drive times by car: Naha city centre 25–30 min, Chatan / American Village 35–45 min, Onna-son west coast (Halekulani, Hyatt Seragaki) 60–75 min, Cape Busena (Busena Terrace) 75–90 min, Nago / Ritz-Carlton 80–90 min, Motobu / Churaumi Aquarium 100–120 min. Miyakojima and Ishigaki are domestic flights (50–60 min from OKA, plus connections from Tokyo).
When is the best time to visit Okinawa?
+
Late April through early July, and October through early November, are the sweet spots — warm enough to swim, fewer typhoons, lower prices than peak August. July and August are peak (and most expensive); the typhoon window runs roughly August–early October. Winter (Dec–Feb) is mild but cool for swimming — better for sightseeing, food and golf than for beaches.
Should I include Naha in my Okinawa itinerary?
+
Yes, but as a one-night first or last stay rather than a base. Naha gives you Kokusai-dori food and shopping, Shuri Castle, and the airport. The actual Okinawa experience — beaches, resorts, snorkeling, Churaumi — is on the resort coast or the outer islands. Don't make Naha the centre of an Okinawa trip.
